BASIC SHIP TERMINOLOGIES

Article by Saurabh Prajapati (B.Tech NAOE Batch of 2011-2015).

Ship is huge structures with a number of components in it. It consists of various parts that are bind together to make this huge structure resist a huge amount of forces that act upon it, during its life at the sea. The following will give a brief description about some basic terminologies in a ship.

After perpendicular (AP): This is the perpendicular line passing through the intersection of the summer load line & the stem.

Forward perpendicular (FP): This is the perpendicular line passing through the intersection of the summer load line & the stern. This line may also pass through the center of the rudder stock.

Summer load line/dead weight line: This is the horizontal line made on the hull to mark the maximum draft the ship can have.Ship parts

Draft: The depth upto which the ship is submerged under the water is known as draft.

Mid ship: The ship is divided into 10 equal no. of stations between the AP & FP. The fifth station is known as the mid ship.

Station: The ship is divided into equal no. of parts between the AP & FP. Thus each part is known as a station.

Trim: The difference in the aft & forward drafts of the ship is known as trim.

Heel: The angular displacement of the ship about its longitudinal axis because of external forces is known as heel.

List: The angular displacement of the ship about its longitudinal axis because of internal forces is known as list.

Buttock plane: Any plane parallel to the centre line of the ship & perpendicular to the   Ship Planwater plane is known as the buttock plane

Body plan: The plan showing the cross section of the ship, as seen along the longitudinal axis, is known as body plan.

Sheer plan: This part of drawing shows the buttock lines of the ship.

Half breadth plan: The waterlines of the ship are seen in this plan.
